LEGO Game Boy Is Coming This October: A Nostalgic Nintendo Tribute

LEGO Game Boy handheld console set, front view with cartridge inserted

Retro gaming enthusiasts and LEGO collectors may soon have a new must-have item. Specifically, in early October, the LEGO Game Boy (set 72046) will arrive in stores. This faithfully recreated replica celebrates Nintendo’s legendary handheld console from 1989. While it’s not a functional device, the set is packed with details. Moreover, it offers a nostalgic treat for anyone who grew up with the original Game Boy.

The LEGO Game Boy consists of 421 pieces. Additionally, it maintains almost 1:1 scale (14 cm tall and 9 cm wide). The design closely replicates the familiar silhouette of the device. Furthermore, it includes functional buttons (A, B, D-pad, Start, and Select). Similarly, the set also features volume and contrast dials, speaker grille, serial number, and even a red LED light to simulate a powered-on state.

The set includes two brick-built cartridgesThe Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening and Super Mario Land. To match them, it comes with three lenticular screen tiles. These include a classic Nintendo startup screen and one gameplay scene from each game. Importantly, these tiles swap easily, and the lenticular effect makes the image appear to shift with the viewing angle. As a result, this gives a subtle illusion of movement. However, it’s important to note: this is not a playable device.

LEGO Game Boy and Nintendo: A Perfect Match for Retro Fans

LEGO targets this set primarily at adult collectors and retro gaming fans. The 18+ label on the box confirms this. The LEGO Game Boy continues the broader collaboration between LEGO and Nintendo. This partnership began in 2020 with Super Mario-themed sets. Later, it expanded to include an NES console, interactive figures, and various expansion packs. This new release continues that trend of celebrating Nintendo’s icons through LEGO’s signature design.

Sales officially begin on October 1, 2025. Meanwhile, pre-orders opened back in late July. The set will retail for $59.99 / €59.99 / £54.99, depending on region.

With its high-quality execution and strong nostalgic appeal, the LEGO Game Boy will likely draw plenty of attention. For those who once held the real thing in their hands, this LEGO version offers a fresh way to relive the magic. Ultimately, it captures the essence of the 8-bit era.

Speaking of retro gaming nostalgia, if you’re feeling inspired to play some classic Game Boy titles yourself, modern devices like the Anbernic RG Cube offer the perfect way to experience those timeless games.
